## Evaluating Powers

Adding a **power** to a number provides a concise way to indicate that a number is being multiplied by itself several times.

The power is added to the top-right of the number (also known as the **base**) being multiplied.

For example, the expression 8^{3} has a base of 8 and a power of 3.

8^{3} = 8 x 8 x 8 = 512.

The power is also known as the **index**. The plural of index is indices.
